The Jesuit Mission Office had a get together with some of our missionaries, visitors and friends at Collins Barracks Museum on Thursday 22 August. This is the fifth year we have had our Day Out together and this Missionaries’ Day Out has now become an annual event. We met up at this beautiful neo-classical building just off Benburb Street, Dublin which was designed by the architect Thomas Burgh in the 17th Century.

The museum is housed in the old Royal Barracks, later renamed after the Commander in Chief and leader of the first Irish Provisional Government, Michael Collins. We were taken on a tour entitled Soldiers & Chiefs which traces Irelands Military history from 1550 into the 21st Century. There was a lot to see including military uniforms, weaponry and battles reinacted with commentary at the press of a button. It was very interesting and we moved through the exhibition from the very early years of pikes and swords right up to the modern tanks and aircraft used by the Irish Army on UN duties in recent years. Although getting tired our elderly men very gallantly continued on into the 1916 exhibition and shortly after we were happy to adjourn to the café for a much needed ‘cuppa’.
Some more colleagues joined us in the close by Ashling Hotel for lunch and it was very pleasant to meet up with old and new friends alike. Thank you to all who came, we were delighted to see you and we hope you had a good day.
