From the construction of multi-purpose halls with classrooms and chapels, to ““Roofs for Relief”, solar panels, fishing boats and mobile banking, Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB – the Jesuit Social Justice mission in the Philippines) has been working hard with its partners to reconstruct daily life after typhoon Haiyan.

Your prayers for the survivors and valued support of €152,024 have helped to make this happen. For updates and stories, go to SLB’s new website: http://slb.ph/haiyan/

In the Province of Capiz, the reconstruction of the Capiz Archdiocesan Catechetical Institute is on-going. This is being monitored in partnership with the Social Action Center of the Diocese. About 20 communities were also given solar panels. There are also on-going solar installations at Barangay Badiangan in the Municipality of Aljuy and Barangay Taloato in the Municipality of San Dionisio. Both were in Iloilo. These areas were identified by the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Jaro. (See Testimonials:http://slb.ph/haiyan/?p=261 )

As for the Province of Dinagat Islands, motorboats are being distributed to the fisherfolk of the municipality who lost their boats during the recent typhoons. The project is in partnership with the parish priests of Dinagat and will be facilitated by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Educational financial assistance is also provided in the Province. SLB had a partnership with Ateneo de Cebu for the ““Roof for Relief” project. It provided roofs and other construction materials to the damaged houses in the northern part of Cebu. This was implemented by partners Gawad Kalinga, LH Foundation Inc. and the Islands Group. In the Municipality of Culion, Palawan, SLB have already started community organizing, boat distributions etc.Read the story of Rommel Villanueva, in the attached report, who is a recipient of a fiberglass boat.
