Devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border have displaced thousands and the death toll continues to rise as search and rescue operations continues to save lives.
The Rasuwa flood swept way houses, shops, vehicles and busy market areas with damage quickly spreading to other districts including Nuwakot and Dhading.
As well as the heartbreaking rise in deaths more than 2,400 people are still missing. The effect of the flash floods has been immense, and time is critical to protect lives.
Our Jesuit partners, the Nepal Jesuit Social Institute (NJSI), on the ground have conducted field and risk assessments to report and monitor the extent of damage to life and infrastructure.
The protection and safety of human life remains the absolute priority, above any other consideration. Lack of road access is hindering assistance, and our partners are in contact with Government bodies regarding blockages and further risk of mudslides.
Our emergency relief and aid response includes:
- Shelter for the displaced
- Food items and non-food needs
- Water, sanitation, and hygiene needs
- Health and protection
- Impact on schools and children
Road blockages and risk of more landslides is slowing coordinated assistance. Government disaster management mechanisms are clearing blockages and coordinating rescue operations.
Our partners are supporting displaced families and responding to their immediate needs from mattresses, tarpaulins and mosquito nets to first-aid kits and essential medicines, including paracetamol, Pantop, Sinex, balm, and Betadine.
