IJI Statement of Humanitarian blockade on Gaza.

Yesterday, Tom Fletcher, the UN Humanitarian chief has said that 14,000 babies would starve to death in Gaza within the next 48hrs.

Fletcher said thousands of trucks of aid were “ready to go”, adding that the lorries contained “baby food and nutrition”.

This blockade of humanitarian aid by Israel is a war crime and thousands of families are at the mercy of the international community watching.

IJI continue to call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine in a genocidal war which, since Oct 2023 has taken the lives of thousands of children, journalists, medical staff and humanitarian workers.

The State of Israel must be made accountable for their disregard for international law. We welcome the Irish government’s recent statement on the critical need for humanitarian assistance into Gaza and the West Bank but it is time now for more than just words.

If we are a country which stands to protect human rights and uphold international law – sanctions and tangible action must be made, as we had done before in reaction to apartheid in South Africa.

We call on the government to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and entry of aid.
We call on the government to enact the Occupied Territories Bill.
We call on the government to stop the movement of ammunitions through Shannon.
We call on the government to stop the selling of ‘war bonds’ by the Irish Central Bank.

Now more than ever, we must stand up for justice and protect the vulnerable.
