The Gift of Life – Water!

In a small village in Malawi – something amazing is happening!

Farmers are being empowered to not only expand their businesses but to work in harmony with nature.

It is Laudato Si in action!

The Tasintha Mlimi project, funded by Misean Cara, is focused on building resilience in vulnerable communities by way of improving food security whilst building grassroot knowledge of sustainable farming practices.

A big part of the project is to tackle deforestation and restore ecosystems for carbon sequestration which is a fancy term about the process in which CO2 and greenhouse gases can be captured and stored reducing the amount being released into our atmosphere.

Despite doing the least to cause global warming, the global south is at the forefront of extreme and harsh weather conditions due to climate change.

Farming is becoming increasingly difficult and leaving vulnerable communities even more vulnerable as they struggle to cope with environmental hardships.

One major challenge is access to water and the need for irrigation to support local communities tirelessly working in the fields.

Happy is one farmer whose life has been transformed thanks to the generosity of donors which has brought water to dry and infertile lands. This is his story.

Happy, a famer in Malawi , poses at his banana plantation.

My name is Happy Chimbalu, a 5th born to Village Headman Chimbalu. Before the project, things were very difficult for us as we had no access to safe and clean water.

Some of the dreams that we had as family were not possible because of the challenges in accessing water.

With the coming of Irish Jesuits International’s water interventions – our lives have completely changed.

We are now able to raise tree seedlings and grow fruit trees with the aim of restoring degraded ecosystems. Through the fruit orchards, we are able to sell extra fruits and get ourselves food for our households. We are benefiting a lot from banana and the oranges we are growing.

Our lives have been transformed!

In addition, in the past we were not able to make manure for farming as we were walking long distances to get water. Now that we have water, we are able to make different manure to restore fertility in our fields. In the past, we used to have poor sanitation facilities and now, our lives have changed.

Do something amazing this Christmas and give the gift of life – water!
